OREO Drives Innovation through Video

4/8/2014
OREO launches a new Snack Hacks video series which embodies the trend of remixing what is currently driving food culture. By-the-book recipes have been replaced with simple, but inventive new ways to be creative with food, whether it's combining unexpected ingredients or dishes, or actually creating a new way to eat a classic. OREO is at the forefront of this movement, using remixing to drive innovation with the launch of Snack Hacks, a content series that transforms the cookie everyone loves into simple and unexpected food creations.

From ramen burgers to donut-croissant hybrids to dessert pizzas, chefs have been experimenting by remixing food coast-to-coast. This trend has in turn inspired consumers to be more creative and imaginative with the food in their own homes, including inventive ways to "hack" the OREO that go beyond twist, lick and dunk. These hacks range from using tools to enjoy the cookie in a new way – such as grinding cookies in a pepper mill over ice cream – to creating delicious OREO combinations – such as making OREO cookies and milk ice cubes for iced coffee. Regardless of the approach and combination, each Snack Hack is an opportunity for a more creative food experience with OREO.

"There will always be the classic way to enjoy OREO, but finding new ways to experiment with the cookie can be deliciously unexpected and fun," says Kristin Hajinlian, brand manager, OREO at Mondelez International, Inc. "Snack Hacks combines the cleverness of hacking with the creativity that is happening in food culture.  We hope it will inspire others to create with OREO."

OREO and its fans have already made some amazing Snack Hacks, but now they're about to get a little help from three food innovators – chef and owner of ink. and ink.sack restaurants Michael Voltaggio, food truck revolutionary and Kogi co-founder Roy Choi, and young gun Nguyen Tran of underground sensation, Starry Kitchen. These chefs are bringing their unique styles to OREO for a Snack Hacks video series launching on the brand's YouTube channel April 8th. You can see the videos here.

"We tapped Michael, Roy and Nguyen because we knew they would be up to the challenge of creating something that OREO had never done before," says Hajinlian. "We've seen amazing response to the Snack Hacks that we have shared with our fans but we were curious to see what would happen if we gave an OREO cookie to some of the most innovative minds in the culinary world. We're excited and amazed by what these three have created."

Each chef's Snack Hack is reflective of their style and personality, and stays true to the spirit of hacking food culture —super easy to make, minimal ingredients, and a delicious taste that only OREO can deliver:

-Michael Voltaggio's "OREO Fanatic Hack": Transforming the snacks people eat on game day or on any day, Voltaggio made his own version of chips and dip, replacing masa with OREO cookies to create OREO Tortilla Chips paired with Strawberry Salsa and an OREO Shandy using Lemon OREO cookies.

"I've always thought outside the box and experimented with food. In particular, I love to look at classics, pull them apart and put them back together in a different way which is why I was so excited to hack an iconic cookie like OREO," says Voltaggio.

-Roy Choi's "OREO Midnight Hack": Drawing inspiration from the late-night cravings that have catapulted the food truck movement, Choi paired OREO with protein, making Golden OREO-Crusted Chicken Tenders.

"Golden OREO cookies have so much flavor and they got me thinking about a hack that could go beyond dessert, especially for late-night. My hack is made of up chicken, egg, flour and OREO cookies – you might not think these four things fit together, but together they are some of the best chicken tenders you'll have," says Choi.

-Nguyen Tran's "OREO Impulse Hack": Using everyday ingredients from a typical corner store, Tran mixed the cookie with diet cherry soda, pound cake and salted peanuts to create a surprising twist on a classic dessert – OREO Bread Pudding.

"For me, success has always been predicated on breaking the rules, and when presented with the crazy rare project to have fun with OREO in a different way, I HURDLED myself at the opportunity. I couldn't have predicted that I could create a drink and dessert combo using just a few things any corner store has. I hope people enjoy my Snack Hack and that it opens a new world of undiscovered OREO deliciousness," says Tran.

In addition to the video series, the OREO Tumblr page will feature other clever and crazy hack ideas, and also ask fans to share new hacks with OREO.
